Curves over finite fields

KOÇ UNIVERSITY MATHEMATICS SEMINAR

Alp Bassa, Boğaziçi University

Questions on solutions of polynomial equations over finite fields have a long history and occupy an important place in number theory. In this talk we will be interested in the particular case, where the equations define algebraic curves. We will give a survey of results on rational points on curves over finite field, focusing on some recent developments on the asymptotics for curves of large genus. We will try to indicate some interesting applications in coding theory and discrete mathematics.

Speaker’s Brief Biography: Alp Bassa obtained his undergraduate degrees in computer engineering and mathematics from the Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Türkiye) in 2004 and his Ph.D. degree in mathematics in 2007 from the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany). After postdoctoral positions at Sabanci University-Istanbul, EPFL-Lausanne, CWI-Amsterdam, NTU-Singapore, he joined the faculty at Sabanci Univeristy (Istanbul, Türkiye) in 2011. He has been working at Boğaziçi University – Istanbul since 2014.
